What is keratosis pilaris?

Keratosis pilaris is a common and harmless skin condition that is caused by a build-up of keratin, a protein found in the outer layer of the skin.

The excess keratin blocks the openings of the hair follicles, causing small red, white or pale brown bumps to appear. (The appearance looks like permanent goose bumps, and is sometimes known as ‘chicken skin’).

These bumps or pimples are usually on the back of the upper arms, thighs and buttocks, and occasionally on the forearms or upper back. In rare cases, they can be on other areas of the body such as the face, eyebrows and scalp.

Keratosis pilaris is often associated with other dry skin conditions, and may appear worse in colder weather. For some people, the bumps or pimples can become inflamed and itchy.
