Your questions answered
How does microneedling work?
Medical skin needling, also referred to as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) and microneedling, is a non-surgical procedure designed to stimulate the body’s own production of collagen and elastin.
It works by passing a roller covered with very fine needles across the surface of the skin. These needles create a series of tiny 'puncture wounds' or micro channels in the top layer of skin, which stimulates the skin's natural healing response.
The needles we use are of the highest quality titanium, and carefully chosen for the correct depth - normally between 0.2 and 1.5 mm - for the area being treated.
As the skin starts to heal itself, it produces new cells, including new collagen and elastin, both of which are needed to give the skin its fuller, healthier and more youthful look.
Taking the downtime into consideration and our busy working lives and commitments we have therefore invested in Dermafrac to offer patients an alternative, which is a fantastic, 4-step microneedling procedure without the downtime.
Patients receive a crystal-free microdermabrasion beforehand to remove any unwanted dead skin cells, which then enables the treatment to needle more effectively. A peptide or stem cell is then selected, according to your skin concern, as this is then delivered at the same time as the machine micro needles the skin, the peptides are delivered through the micro-channels that instantly plump and rejuvenate the skin.
Directly after, Skin Perfection would use LED light therapy connected to the same machine to address and calm the redness and inflammation (red light), breakouts and bacteria (blue light) if this is a concern, or to boost the collagen with the (yellow light) which has fabulous anti-ageing benefits.
As the machine does the work it is a much more controlled procedure over the hand held rollers and the downtime is more minimal so some patients can return straight back to work. We also deliver the whole syringe of the peptide solution so is great for the skins health, and boosts instantly.
For your safety
To protect your skin from infection, we use a fresh, sterile roller for each procedure and discard it after use. We will not use the same roller again for you or for any other patient.
How long does microneedling take?
The Dermaroller procedure itself takes about 20 minutes, as the device is moved across the skin in six areas: the forehead, cheeks, nose, upper lip, chin, and neck.
Dermafrac can take up to 60 minutes.
You will need to allow a period of between 20 and 30 minutes for the anesthetic cream to work before we can start the treatment.
Does microneedling hurt?
Treatment can be carried out using a topical anesthetic cream for the handheld devices but is not needed for the Dermafrac procedure. Most patients report little discomfort.
Some redness may persist for a couple of days if having Dermarollers, but the downtime generally associated with this treatment is minimal as it switch the Dermafrac.
While most patients do not bleed during the procedure, a small minority of patients do.
Is there any downtime with this treatment?
At Skin Perfection, we understand that not all patients want to experience any downtime from their treatments, including swelling, redness or bruising and some of the hand held roller techniques, although deliver fast and fabulous results, do have a certain amount of downtime to them.
Some patients may experience just a small amount of erythema (redness) which may resolve quickly, where as some patients may swell slightly and take several days to calm down.
Usually the first two days are when you're most red and swollen. After 48 hours your skin should start to calm down.
How many treatments will I need?
During your consultation, your Skin Perfection practitioner will discuss your individual needs to make sure you get the maximum benefits from microneedling.
However, we generally recommend a minimum course of 3 treatments - at 2-weekly intervals for Dermafrac, and at intervals of between 4 and 6 weeks for Dermaroller.
Treatment for deeper scarring may need more sessions.
