About ingrown hairs

What are ingrown hairs?

Ingrown hairs are, as the name suggests, simply hairs that have curled round and grown back into the skin, especially after they have been shaved or cut.

Anyone can get them, but they do tend to be more of a problem for people with curly or coarse hair. For women, ingrown hairs are most common on the legs, pubic area and armpits and sometimes, particularly in darker skin types, on the face.

And while they’re not a serious health problem, the spots can become itchy, painful and even infected.

If the problem does eventually go away on its own, the affected area of skin can be left a darker colour and scarred.
