About acne, oily skin and blocked pores

What is acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that affects most people, to some extent, usually when they are in their teens and early twenties.

Sometimes, however, 'adult acne' can continue into later years causing distress to our everyday lives.

Acne can vary from relatively mild and superficial blackheads or whiteheads with oily skin, to more severe inflamed spots and cysts that may leave permanent scarring.

What causes acne?

There have been many myths over the years about the causes of acne and how to treat it.

It’s mainly due to hormonal changes that cause an over-production of sebum (the oil that the skin produces naturally to keep itself from drying out). When the skin’s pores (openings for hair follicles) become blocked with excess sebum and dead skin cells, oily skin, blocked pores and acne are the result.

Treatments for oily skin, blocked pores and acne

We offer the following treatments for oily skin, blocked pores and acne.

Laser photo-facial skin rejuvenation - improves skin tone and texture for a more youthful look, and is suitable for a range of conditions including sun damage, wide and localised areas of pigmentation (discolouration), rosacea, redness and inflammation, and visible (or broken) veins; with minimal downtime.

LED light therapy - uses blue light therapy to treat the causes and symptoms of acne and rosacea, by reducing inflammation, irritation and bacteria, with no downtime; can be carried out as part of a four-stage process or as a booster to any skin treatment.

Medical microdermabrasion - a fast and effective treatment for acne and keratosis pilaris that uses a non-surgical but deep-penetrating resurfacing procedure to clean blocked or congested pores; tailored to your skin condition and with little downtime. This is a more effective treatment than ordinary, salon-grade micro-dermabrasion (hence the word ‘medical’) as the crystals used are aluminium oxide and sapphire-shaped, which means they hit the skin at every angle. Unlike many clinics or medi-spas, we only use sterile disposable tips, one for each patient and we never use the same tip for anyone else.

Micro-needling - used as a stand-alone treatment or as part of a four-stage process to help reduce lines, wrinkles, open pores and acne scarring, and treat dry and dehydrated skin - leaving your skin looking fresher and smoother. With two treatment options: our state-of-the-art Dermafrac machine (minimal downtime) or a Dermaroller (slightly longer downtime).

Skin peels or resurfacers - help to improve skin texture and redefine pores, and suitable for a range of conditions including pigmentation (discolouration), scars left by ingrown hairs, lines and wrinkles, redness or rosacea and acne; available in different strengths and with different downtimes, according to your skin condition as well as time, financial or social commitments.

A combination of any of the above treatments may be suitable - after your consultation, your Skin Perfection specialist may discuss combining some of these treatment options to maximize your results.

To find out which of these treatments is most suitable for you, and to receive your free skin health check, please call us today to book your free consultation.

Products for oily skin, blocked pores and acne

Our skincare products are classed as ‘cosmeceutical’ grade or medical grade, as they have active ingredients that penetrate under the skin.

We avoid using the kind of non-cosmeceutical products that can be bought from some department stores or salons; these may look nice in fancy bottles but are a waste of money. Because these products contain ingredients that are not active enough, they simply sit on top of your skin and have no affect on the root of the problem.

We make sure that, as a patient embarking on a skin care treatment plan in clinic, you have the correct products selected by your skin specialist, to maintain and maximise your results.

Following a thorough consultation and skin-health check, we may suggest one or more of these products as part of the treatment plan to help you manage oily skin, blocked pores or acne:
