About hyperhidrosis

What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is the medical name for the often awkward and embarrassing problem of severe or excessive sweating.

Excessive sweating most often occurs in the armpits, palms of the hands, feet, chest and groin. For some people, the condition can significantly affect both work and social life, and can leave obvious marks on or even completely ruin their clothing.

It's more common condition than you might think - probably about one person in every 200 may have hyperhidrosis, even if some only have it for a period of time.

How is it treated?

If you do suffer from hyperhidrosis, you will know about its detrimental effect on your life and self-confidence. Your GP may have offered prescription antiperspirants that contain aluminium chloride, only to be disappointed when they have little or no effect (not to mention the fact that aluminium is not great for your body). You may also have considered the drastic step of undergoing surgery.

However, we can offer you a highly effective alternative in the form of Botox injections - see below for more information about Botox treatment for hyperhidrosis.

Botox treatment for hyperhidrosis

Botox treatments at Skin Perfection

At Skin Perfection, we offer a very effective treatment for hyperhidrosis in the form of Botox injections. And you can be sure of receiving the best Botox treatment available because the preparation we use – manufactured by Allergan – is one of the best products on the market.

And since it is a prescription-only medicine, Botox injections at Skin Perfection are administered by our specially-qualified and registered doctor, who has an in-depth knowledge of injectable treatments.

How does Botox work?

A series of small injections of the Botox botulinum toxin are made into the skin of the area affected by hyperhidrosis. The Botox effectively immobilise the sweat glands, blocking the nerve impulses that lead to perspiration.

For most patients, the effect lasts up to about 6 months.

What happens during the treatment?

Having cleaned the area ready for treatment, your Skin Perfection doctor will highlight the sweat pores using a blend of iodine and starch which will ‘stain’ the sweat area. This shows where greater concentration of Botox injections are needed.

The treatment takes about 30 minutes to complete, and patients usually notice the sweating has decreased by up to 95% within a few days of the treatment, with the full effect working within 14 days.

Is Botox treatment safe?

Botox injection treatment for hyperhidrosis is quick, safe and painless. It has been used in the NHS for over 30 years, for a variety of conditions, and has an excellent safety record.

Please refer to our information on botulinum toxin treatment for lines and wrinkles for further detail on the use and background of this prescription-only medicine.

Is the treatment painful?

You may notice a little discomfort from having an injection, but we normally use an EMLA local anaesthetic cream to numb the area prior to administering the treatment.
